Jones throws better at 2nd Tide pro day

Jones throws better at 2nd Tide pro day … Alabama QB Mac Jones probably had a better day today throwing the ball at the Tide’s second pro day than he did last week at Alabama’s first go-round. The ball still doesn’t explode out of his hand as it does with some of the stronger-armed QBs and there a… Read More »

pro day potpourri

Pro day potpourri  … While we wait for today’s pro days, including ‘biggies’ at Alabama and Ohio State to get underway, a couple of follow-up notes from yesterday’s on-campus workouts. Most of the attention on Monday’s pro days, of course, was on the session at Miami where DEs Jaelin Phillips and Greg Rousseau worked out, but in fact… Read More »

Jags, Niners commit to QB picks

Jags, Niners commit to QB picks … Normally at this time of year just over a month to the draft, teams tend to be tight-lipped about their upcoming pick, even those teams with very high selections for which it seems pretty obvious who the pick is going to be. Not so much this year though. Jacksonville head coach… Read More »

bama/Ohio State pro days

Tide, Bucks hilite busy pro day sked set to go … The final – and arguably busiest- week on this year’s pro day circuit continues Tuesday when Alabama holds its second pro at which most of the Tide’s top prospects ARE supposed to participate, along with Ohio State where QB Justin Fields is expected to draw a crowd.… Read More »

Miami of Ohio pro day

Nice day for two-time all-MAC OT Tommy Doyle, who certainly looks the part at 6-8, 320 with 35-inch arms. Doyle also moved suprisingly well for such a big guy as he posted a 40-clocking in the mid-5.1 range, had a 32-inch vertical and a 9-3 LJ, while posting times of 4.61 seconds in the short shuttle and 7.57… Read More »

Louisiana pro day

Impressive day for Ragin’ Cajuns RB Elijah Mitchell as he was credited with an unofficial 4.32 40 time at the Louisiana pro day. And he backed that up with some other very athletic numbers including a 37.5-inch vertical and agility test times of 4.18 in the short shuttle and 6.87 in the 3-cone drill.

Duke pro day

Despite the fact that the Blue Devils were just 2-9 last fall, 31 of the NFL’s 32 team were at the Duke pro day. Many were there to see the Blue Devils edge-rushing combo of DEs Chris Rumph and Victor Dimukeje who combined to register 15.5 sacks between them last fall. Unfortunately, though, Rumph was unable to work… Read More »

Arizona State pro day

In the end, the only former Sun Devil to work out at the Arizona State pro day was veteran WR Frank Darby, a 3rd day prospect for the upcoming draft. And for the most part, Darby tested like an early-to-mid third day prospect as he measured in at a chiseled 6-1, 200, but with arms just under 32-inches… Read More »

North Carolina pro day

Nothing really spectacular at the UNC pro day, just a lot of guys checking off a lot of boxes. WR Dyami Brown, for example, ran pretty well, clocking times of 4.44 in the 40 and 6.90 in the three-cone drill, both of which would have been among the better figures at the 2020 combine; Brown’s short shuttle time… Read More »

DE Phillips dazzles at Canes pro day

DE Phillips dazzles at Canes pro day … It was DEs on parade at today’s Miami pro day where Greg Rousseau, Jaelan Phillips and Quincy Roche all worked out. And while Rousseau was the guy everyone was expecting to put on a freakish performance, it was Phillips that stole the show. Phillips measured in at 6-5, 260 with… Read More »

final full week on pro day sked set to go

Final full week on pro day sked set to go … The final – and arguably busiest- week on this year’s pro day circuit gets underway tomorrow with over a half dozen on-campus workouts including those at Miami and North Carolina. The session at Miami will almost assuredly draw the most interest from NFL teams with DEs Greg… Read More »

Presumed #1 pick Lawrence to skip draft

Presumed #1 pick Lawrence to skip draft … What if they gave a draft party and nobody came? We are not quite there yet, but Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence, the presumptive #1 pick overall at next month’s draft, has confirmed that he will not be attending the draft in Cleveland. Instead, Lawrence indicated that he’ll be watching the… Read More »

Pro day leftovers

Pro day leftovers … With the final full week on this year’s pro day schedule set to kick-off tomorrow, we’ve had a chance to go back over some of our notes from this month’s on-campus workouts. In the process we were able to identity a number of pro day workouts that we weren’t able to flag earlier to… Read More »

Coastal Carolina pro day

The Chanticleers had a dream 11-1 season in which their only loss was in OT in their bowl game, while star DE Tarron Jackson had a dream season of his own in which he was the Sun Belt defensive player of the year, a consensus All-American, and a finalist for the prestigious Lombardi Award (along with Trevor Lawrence… Read More »

Boston College pro day

The key workouts at the BC were a little contradictory as both TE Hunter Long and LB Isaiah McDuffie timed well in the 40, whereas the rest of their workouts were kind of ‘meh’. Long, one of the top 2-3 prospects at the position for the upcoming draft, for example, was clocked in a very good 4.63 for… Read More »

South Dakota State pro day

South Dakota State WR Cade Johnson, a two-time FCS All-American who had 140 receptions for over 2,500 yards and 25 TDs over the past two seasons, was one of those small school stars NFL personnel people were eager to get a look at at their pro days. Unfortunately, Johnson came up a little short as in not very… Read More »

Georgia Southern pro day

The Eagles have an interesting second-tier edge rushing prospect in Ray Johnson, a 4-year starter who has been reasonably productive at Georgia Southern despite being somewhat miscast as an undersized 3-4 DE. Johnson measured in at 6-2, 260 at the Eagles pro day, but with reasonably long 33-inch arms. He also tested reasonably well, posting a 33-inch vertical,… Read More »

San Diego State pro day

SDSU CB Darren Hall is one of the better kept secrets in college football despite the fact that he tied for the national lead in total pass breakups in 2019 with 17. He followed that up in 2020 with three picks and 6 other pass breakups in 9 games as opponents generally stayed on the other side of… Read More »

Projection updated

Projection updated … We actually weren’t planning on updating our first-round projection until later in the week, but with all those trades last week shaking up this year’s opening round selection order, we figured we really couldn’t wait so here you go! And with the 49ers moving up to the 3rd pick presumably to take a QB, the… Read More »

SMU pro day

The Mustangs have a really intriguing DB prospect in CB Brandon Stephens who was actually originally recruited by UCLA as a RB; in fact, he played RB for the Pac-12 Bruins, albeit sparingly, for parts of three seasons before transferring to SMU where he switched to corner and ultimately broke up 22 passes in his two seasons out… Read More »

Pro day hilites

Northern Iowa: Both of Northern Iowa’s legit NFL prospects had really good pro day workouts. OT Spencer Brown, who measured in at a rangy 6-8.5, 311 with 34.75 inch arms, tested very well for a player that size. He put up 29 reps in the bench press and then ran a very athletic 40 in the 4.9-flat range,… Read More »

North Texas pro day

The Mean Green haven’t had a player drafted since 2004 but see that streak ended this year as WR Jaelon Darden is part of the deep receiver class fo 2021. Darden, who had a breakout year this past fall when he caught 76 passes for over 1,100 yards and 19 TDs in just 9 games, isn’t all that… Read More »

Couple of trade updates

Couple of trade updates … There are a couple of updates to the spate of trades that took place last week. Memphis pro day

NFL teams were very interested to see how Memphis RB Kenneth Gainwell tested after he had a breakout year in 2019 when he had over 2,000 yards from scrimmage including 1,460 on the ground while catching 51 passes for another 600 yards. Gainwell, though, is another player who opted out of the 2020 season so hasn’t been seen… Read More »

Mississippi State pro day

The featured player at the Mississippi State pro day was RB Kylin Hill who had a breakout year in 2019 when he ran for over 1,300 yards and 10 TDs, but then opted out on the Bulldogs after 3 games – and 58 measly yards – this past season. Hill was solid, albeit unspectacular in his return to… Read More »
