More random thoughts on the ’25 QB conundrum … We have noted on several occasions in the past several weeks there seems to be some serious rethinking of the QB situation for the upcoming draft. For the first month and a half of the college season, the consensus around the NFL appeared to be that there were a half dozen or so solid prospects at the position, although there clearly was also still considerable variation in the particular order for those guys. More recently, though, it appears that Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders has emerged as a consensus top prospect at the position, although not quite with the can’t miss tag that Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels had this past year. And just about everybody also seems to really like Miami’s Cam Ward, though, he is still a somewhat of an unconventional passer.
On the other hand, as we have noted, Carson Beck of Georgia, Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, and Quinn Ewers of Texas have each had their issues of late and appear to have seen some slippage in their draft status. And that may have opened the door to a number of second-tier type guys like Drew Allar of Penn State, Garrett Nussmeier of LSU, Kyle McCord of Syracuse, Ohio State’s Will Howard, and even Kurtis Rourke of Indiana who continue to have strong seasons. In fact, Nussmeier, in particular, seems to be creating considerable buzz at this time, although we also note that he appears to be the same Garrett Nussmeier whom the local papers in the area are asking ‘what’s wrong with Garrett Nussmeier these days?’ after a couple of somewhat sub-par outings which LSU did win, but he had less that sterling numbers. Indeed, in those two games against Arkansas and Mississippi, Nussmeier completed barely 50% of his throws with just 3 TDs against 2 picks. Whatever, we may find out more about Nussmeier over the next couple of weeks because the Tigers play at Texas A&M this weekend for first place in the SEC and then face Alabama in their next game. Stay tuned.
Bottom line is that unlike last year when Williams, Daniels and Maye were pretty much baked into the top of the board pretty much all year, this year’s QB situation is extremely volatile with the potential for a lot of movement between now and April 24th. Indeed – and we’re just spit-balling here – but in the end it won’t be a huge surprise if guys like Beck, Allar, Ewers, Nussmeier and even Milroe ultimately opt to return to school next fall unless they’re guaranteed a top 5 pick which right now looks like a stretch. Again, stay tuned, it is going to be an interesting run!!
