DL weigh-in notes

March 2, 2023

Defensive line weigh-in notes … While we wait for the next group to run their 40s, just a couple of notes from the DT and DEs weigh-in sessions. We already noted that Pitt’s Calijah Kancey, who led all the DTs with a very quick 4.73 unofficial 40 time, measured in at 6-1, pretty much a full inch taller than expected, but only had 30.5″ arms which is really short; by comparison, that’s was over 2-inches shorter than Aaron Donald, Kancey’s NFL comp. Meanwhile, Georgia’s Jalen Carter, back in Indy after being charged and released for those driving offences back in Athens last night, checked off the size boxes as he measured in at 6-3, 314 with 33.5-inch arms. Clemson’s Brian Bresee also looked the part at 6-5.5, 298, but came in a little short-armed at just 32-inches. Otherwise, not a whole lot that jumped out among the DTs other than the fact maybe that Moro Ojama of Texas, South Carolina’s Zaach Pickens, Byron Young of Alabama and Cameron Young of Mississippi State each had 34.5-inch arms.

Still waiting for all the numbers for the DE/ERs but a couple of guys that really impressed in shorts were Tyree Wilson of Texas Tech and Ohio State’s Zach Harrison. Wilson, a top 5-10 prospect who won’t work out today because of injury, measured in at a sleek 6-6, 271 with 35.5-inch arms, while Harrison was also 6-6 and 274 with even longer 36-plus inch arms. Same for Georgia Tech’s Keion White, a rising prospect who also measured in at 6-6, 261 with 35.5-inch arms. Interesting, though, that White had been expected to be more tweener sized at closer to 285-290. In fact, that may have been the story line for the DE/ER weigh-in as there was a similar story for Mike Morris of Michigan (6-5, 275), USC’s Tuli Tuipulotu (6-3, 266), and Colby Wooden of Auburn(6-5, 275), each of whom was also expected to weight close to 290. Tuipulotu also measured in with relatively short 32-inch arms. On the other hand, scouts were wondering if Florida A&M LB/ER Isaiah Land would weigh as much as 225, but he’s being listed at a full-sized 6-4, 268 with 34-inch arms.

Also note that rising Michigan DT Mazi Smith will not work out because of a tweaked hamstring.
