As the QB turns … In addition to the news today that Tampa Bay has named Baker Mayfield as the starting QB for the season opener, a couple or three other QB-related tidbits from the wire today. ESPN, for example, has a quick review of the progress to date of the leading QBs selected at the 2023 draft for those that have not seen it yet. Hint: An no surprise its been a mixed bag so far, although reading between the lines the consensus seems to be that the good outweighs the bad. Meanwhile, long-time draft analyst Rob Rang, who is now working for Fox Sports, has an overview of the top 15 QBs in college football this fall. Not surprisingly, most are the usual suspects like Southern Cal’s Caleb Williams and Drake Maye of North Carolina, but Rang’s list also includes several lesser known names such as Boise State redshirt sophomore Taylen Green, an emerging dual-threat prospect. Rang’s list also includes a couple of names we keep hearing whispers about re their pro potential in Riley Leonard of Duke and Tennessee’s Joe Milton. We are also happy to see Kurtis Rourke of Ohio on Rang’s list, if for no other reason than he’s a fellow Canadian, although he’s also a really good prospect who, as a MAC QB, doesn’t get the same national exposure as other big-name prospects. And for those that like to look down the road, and we mean way down the road, Ju Ju Lewis, a high school sophomore QB from Georgia, who is already considered to be the early, and again very early, favorite to be the #1 pick in 2029, announced today that he has committed to Southern California.
