LSU, SEC dominate opening round … No surprises here as LSU, the reigning national champions led all schools with 5 players selected in last night’s opening round, including QB Joe Burrow the first player selected overall. The Tigers edged out SEC West rival Alabama which had four players selected. Just how deep those programs are, both also had a couple of players who were fully expected to be taken who were passed over including star safeties Grant Delpit of the Tigers and the Tide’s Xavier McKinney. Meanwhile, Ohio State had three players selected including DE Chase Young and CB Jeff Okudah who went 2nd and 3rd respectively, while Clemson, Georgia, Auburn, Oklahoma and, somewhat surprisingly, Texas Christian each had two players selected last evening. What wasn’t close were the numbers for the conferences as the SEC simply dominated with 15 players, almost half, selected in the opening round. That included 6 of the first ten picks. The Big Ten and Big XII followed with 5 picks each, while the Pac-12 had 4 and the ACC just 3. It was a Power-5 night, though, as all but one player selected last evening was one if the so-called major conferences. The lone exception was Utah State QB Jordan Love who was selected by Green Bay late in the round.
