Disappointing day at Clemson pro day … There was a full contingent of NFL personnel execs at today’s pro day at national champion Clemson including G.M.s Marty Hurney of Carolina, Pittsburgh’s Kevin Colbert and Todd Bowles of Tampa Bay as well as head coaches Mike Tomlin of Pittsburgh, Tennessee’s Mike Vrabel and Zac Taylor of Cincinnati. Unfortunately, they probably didn’t see what they were hoping to see. For starters, star DE Clelin Ferrell, a top 10-15 prospect who did not run at the combine, had to withdraw from participating in today’s on-field testing when a turf toe injury flared up in the past few days. On the other hand, fellow DE Austin Bryant was never going to participate today as he is still rehabbing from surgery for a pectoral injury. At the same time, three other former Tigers who also did not run at the combine, did run their 40s today but none had much to brag about afterwards. OT Mitch Hyatt, for example, was clocked in the 5.25-5.30 range, which isn’t bad, but its also not great for a 303-pounder with LT aspirations. Same story for LBs Tre Lamar and Kendall Joseph, both of who were timed in the 4.95-5.00 range for the 40. That time was especially disappointing for Lamar who many scouts rate among the top 5 ILBs in this draft class, but that time isn’t going to get it done. It will be interesting to see if Lamar runs again at a private workout as there were reports that he was actually iffy for today’s pro day because of an injury.
