Would the real ‘Year of the QB’ please stand up! … Back at the beginning of the current season the word around the NFL was that any team looking for an upgrade at QB probably didn’t want to delay as the 2024 class at the position looked to be potentially one of the best ever while pickings in the near the future looked like they could be pretty slim. That was then though! Indeed with so many of the prospective top QBs in the 2024 draft opting to return to school next fall, either with their original team or through the transfer portal, the 2025 class could make a pretty compelling case that they were in fact much closer to the actual ‘year of the QB.’ Granted, 2025 still doesn’t necessarily look like it will have an elite prospect like USC’s Caleb Williams, but it looks like it will have some very good ones including Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Georgia’s Carson Beck and Riley Leonard, now of Notre Dame, as well as Quinn Ewers of Texas who is thought to be leaning toward returning. And the top of that class could get even stronger if Michigan’s JJ McCarthy also returns. And they’ll be backed up by veterans like Cam Ward, Dillon Gabriel, KJ Jeffereson, DJ Uiagalelei and Tyler Van Dyke who are all in the various stages of transferring.
Needless to say, the return of all those guys has seriously thinned out the depth of the 2024 QB class. ESPN just posted an article on where the 2024 QB draft class stands and in it they suggest that there may only be 4 or 5 QBs taken in the opening round this year with maybe a couple or three on the second day and not much else until the later rounds. The article also suggested that Williams and North Carolina’s Drake Maye are still solidly at the top of the 2024 board, with LSU’s Jayden Daniels THE wild card of this year’s draft. But then again they aren’t necessarily saying all that much new. Stay tuned.
And just as a post script to the story, while there has still been no official announcement, Deion Sanders, Colorado head coach and Shedeur’s father, confirmed again that his son will be back at school in 2024 saying that Shedeur would be good to go at the Buffs’ spring practices.
