Who’s #3; where’s #3

Who’s #3; where’s #3 … For those that haven’t seen it yet, there is an interesting piece over at ESPN where three of their draft analysts do a kind of combined mock of the first ten picks of the upcoming draft. It is a little confusing in the sense that while the article was published this week, they used a draft order from the previous week so they have the Giants picking second whereas they actually dropped down to #5 after beating Washington on Sunday. But the order isn’t necessarily relevant to what kind of jumps out from the article. Not surprisingly, they have QBs Caleb Williams of USC and North Carolina’s Drake Maye going 1-2 with Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison. However, while just about every team picking after that, at least thru the top ten, can be classified as QB-challenged, no other QB is taken. And that kind of reinforces what we have been hearing from around the league. In particular, it appears that just about every team views Williams and Maye as potential franchise QBs, but the league still isn’t quite sure what they have in the rest of the QB class. No question that there are some talented college passers out there including, in no particular order, Bo Nix of Oregon, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, JJ McCarthy of Michigan and Washington’s Michael Penix, but all have questions, at least as potential first-round picks. Indeed, its not clear, at this point, whether any carries a consensus first-round grade, which should make the combine and other pre-draft testing particularly important this year. Stay tuned.
