USFL draft continues today; former Michigan QB Patterson first pick overall … The fledgling USFL will return this spring with its own version of spring football. And to get there the league is conducting its first player draft literally as we speak. The Michigan Panthers had the first pick in yesterday’s opening round and selected former Michigan QB Shea Patterson, while the Tampa Bay Bandits took former Ole Miss QB Jordan Ta’amu with the second pick. The USFL draft actually has a couple of unique features. First, each round is dedicated to a particular position so every team actually took a QB in yesterday’s opening round. At the same time, the picks are awarded in reverse in every round. So the New Orleans Breakers, who had the final pick in the opening round, had the first pick in the second and selected former Georgia DE Davin Bellamy. In fact, almost all the players selected so far have been out of college for awhile with most having had some kind of NFL experience. The first 12 rounds of the USFL draft were held yesterday while rounds 13-35 are being conducted as we speak. Courtesy of Sports Illustrated here is a list of the updated picks by team. The USFL season is scheduled to kick-off on April 16th with 8 teams.
