Updated draft numbers… We have had a chance to go over the results of yesterday’s transaction frenzy as teams around the NFL got down to their opening-day, 53-man rosters. In the end, by our unofficial numbers, a total of 18 players drafted in 2023 were released, while another 13 were placed on an exempt list such as the physically-unable-to-perform or non-football injury lists or injured reserve. The number released was actually one more than last year when 17 were cut prior to the establishment of the season’s roster, but it remains well below earlier historical trends. As noted last evening, as recently as 2017, for example, 30 draft picks did not make their team’s initial 53-man roster, while the figures were 33 in 2015 and 36 in 2014.
