Third round appraoching

April 30, 2022

Third day looming … Just a reminder to everyone – as anyone needs it – that today’s 4th round begins at Noon ET with Tampa Bay currently on the clock. Certainly the story of yesterday’s second and third rounds – and maybe of the whole draft – was the dramatic slide of the top-rated QBs. Remember there was some talk of Liberty’s Malik Willis going as early as the 2nd pick on Thursday. In the end, Willis wasn’t actually picked up until Tennessee traded up with Las Vegas to select him with the 86th pick. And that was actually after Atlanta had taken Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder a few picks earlier at #74, while for the record, Ole Miss’ Matt Corral was taken with the 94th pick by Carolina after a traded back into the late second day with Kansas City. Of course, no one thought this was a great year for QBs, but it is hard to imagine that anyone expected this year’s QBs would last as long as they did. One possible answer is that teams are simply looking ahead to 2023 which should have a much stronger QB class led by Bryce Young of Alabama and CJ Stroud of Ohio State and don’t want to be tied to a young QB this year. And speaking of next year’s draft, we finally had our first trades involving 2023 picks as both New England and Denver landed 3rd round picks in next year’s draft in late trades yesterday with the Patriots getting Carolina’s and the Broncos picking up a future 3rd from Indianapolis.
