The elephant in the room … Several people have written in in the past few days and asked in essence ‘what the heck are the Texans thinking?’ in potentially passing on taking a QB with the 2nd pick overall. The easy answer is ‘I don’t know!’ but we don’t want to lose sight of what is in essence the elephant in the room and that is the 2024 draft class in general and QBs Caleb Williams of USC and North Carolina’s Drake Maye in particular. In fact you’d be hard-pressed to find anybody in the NFL who wouldn’t say rather emphatically that Williams and Maye would not be the first two QBs off the board this year if they had been eligible. And Williams, in particular, looks all the part of the second coming of Patrick Mahomes. However, any team that takes a QB early this year will be pretty much precluded from taking a Williams or a Maye if they had the chance next year. As a general rule, teams don’t like trying to project where they are going to be a full season down the road, but a case could certainly be made for a team like Houston, which lets be honest isn’t very good right, to build up the roster with their bevy of picks this year and maybe revisit the QB situation next spring.
