suspensions

Two vet college players supsended; one back … With college football teams returning to practice this week there has been some disciplinary housecleaning underway. North Carolina, for example, suspended senior CB Malik Simmons for the first two games of the season after he appeared in court last week to face two misdemeanor charges, one for marijuana possession and the second for resisting arrest following an off-campus altercation that involved other members of the UNC football team earlier this year. Meanwhile, Utah State WR Huner Sharp, who had 66 catches for almost 1,000 yards last fall, will also miss the first two games of the season for one of those proverbial violation of team rules. On the other hand, veteran Tennessee WR Von Pearson is back practicing with the team after it was announced that he would not face charges of sexual assault because of insufficient evidence. Pearson had been suspended from the team and school back in April after a female student alleged he sexually assaulted her; Pearson, though, isn’t quite in the clear and he could still face a student conduct hearing and possible further university punishment. The 6-2, 190-pound Pearson had 38 catches for the Vols last fall after transferring in from the junior college ranks. While all three players would normally have been expected to start for their respective teams this fall, none is more than a late-round prospect for the upcoming draft.
