Sunday draft notes

April 23, 2017

Jags say 4th pick available; other pre-draft notes … Despite the fact that the draft is just 5 days away and counting, it remains relatively quiet around the league. However, Jacksonville did add its name to the list of teams picking early that would be willing to move down. New/old Jaguars’ football head honcho Tom Coughlin indicated as much at the team’s pre-draft presser when he responded that everything was on the table when asked whether Jacksonville would be open to trading down. And it make would sense for the Jaguars to move down from #4 if they get an offer as their main issues revolve around the offensive line which they aren’t going to address that early. The Jaguars have also been regularly mocked selecting LSU RB Leonard Fournette with the 4th pick, but if they aren’t sold on him the best players available at that time will almost all be defensive guys and the Jags already have one of the better young defenses in the league. Meanwhile, speaking of Fournette, both Carolina G.M. Dave Gettleman and head coach Ron Rivera were effusive of their praise of the former LSU star as well as Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey at their pre-draft presser. All that suggested that the Panthers will likely target one or the other with the 8th pick. Interesting, though, that Florida State RB Dalvin Cook, this year’s other top back did not appear to come up in the conversation. At the same time, the draft’s biggest wild card at this time appears to be San Francisco which quite literally go in as many as a half dozen directions with the second pick overall. The 49ers could take a QB; they could take a DE like Solomon Thomas from across the bay at Stanford, they could take one of the top DBs, while LSU RB Leonard Fournette and Alabama LB Reuben Foster are also rumored to be still in the mix. One interesting note re the 49ers is that there is a bit of a buzz that if they were to select a QB with the second pick no one should be surprised if it’s Deshaun Watson instead of North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky. Stay tuned!!
