“Gentlemen, er …warm up your engines …” The new NFL year doesn’t officially begin until 4 PM ET on Wednesday this week, however, starting at 4 PM ET today, teams are allowed to begin talking with prospective free agents, although no one can formally be signed until Wednesday. Of course, if the year is about to start it means that all teams must be down to the league’s salary cap limit by the end of business on Wednesday and there is the expectation that a number of veterans could released today as teams position themselves for what is to come later in the week. Already so far today, Washington has reportedly released QB Robert Griffen, while the Giants have reportedly told star WR Victor Cruz, who has barely played the past couple of seasons because of injuries that he will be released if he does not accept a pay cut. Stay tuned.
