Star Vols OT Smith cleared to play

August 28, 2019

Star Vols OT Smith cleared to play … There just aren’t enough good news stories from the world of college football these days, however, there is a good one out of Tennessee where junior OT Trey Smith has been cleared to play and will be in the lineup when the Vols open the season saturday afternoon against Georgia State.  Smith was one of the top-rated recruits in the country when he signed on at Tennessee in 2017 where he was named a freshman All-American after his first year with the program. Smith missed the final five games of the 2018 season after he was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs. In fact, it appeared that Smith would likely never play again, but he is going to give it a shot after talking it over with his family, doctors and school officials. If healthy, Smith would have been a top prospect for either 2020 and 2021, but given the long-term health concerns it is unlikely that he’d ever be drafted.
