Senior Bowl game OL review … It was certainly disappointing that in addition to Washington QB Michael Penix a number of other top prospects opted to sit out Saturday’s actual Senior Bowl game in Mobile. And that number including several top offensive line candidates including OTs Taliese Fuaga of Oregon State, Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton and Christian Jones of Texas, along with Oregon C Jackson Powers-Johnson. And in truth there wasn’t a whole lot new among those that did play as for the most part, guys did what they did in practice. The one Senior Bowl offensive line who did significantly pick up his game on Saturday was Arizona OT Jordan Morgan who had a very up-and-down series of practices, but was more than solid during the game, although he did have a tendency to be a little over aggressive at times when he lunged out his man rather than wait for the play to come him. Meanwhile, fellow OTs Kingsley Saumataia of BYU, Ethan Driskell of Marshall and Patrick Paul of Houston were what they are; that is, big guys that can really lock on when they get their hands on people, but struggled at times to cut off the edge from quicker pass rushers, as well as deal with counter moves. Same story for Javon Foster of Missouri who also really struggled to cut off the edge. As such, it wouldn’t be surprise if at least some of those OTs actually end up kicking inside to OG at the next level.
At the same time, a pretty good case can be made that the OGs were one of the more consistent groups in Mobile. Indeed, a pretty good case can be made that the best offensive lineman in the Senior Bowl game was Wisconsin C/G Tanor Bortolini, who showed very quick feet, nice balance and excellent technique. We also thought TCU G/T Brandon Coleman had a solid game; he was particularly impressive pulling and trapping. And Miami’s Javion Cohen, who was arguably the best OG over the week of practice did nothing to hurt his grade, although he only played a couple of series. Same for UConn’s Christian Haynes. One other interior OL that we thought had a really solid game was LSU C/G Charles Turner.
