Rich QB class gets richer … With Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields at the very top of the board, and rising FCS star Trey Lance not that far behind, 2021 was always going to be one of those ‘year-of-the-QB’ drafts. However, the buzz around the NFL scouting community is that two other QBs – Zach Wilson of BYU and Florida’s Kyle Trask – could make it 5 QBs with top 10 potential at this spring’s draft. In fact, the GBN scout staff already has Wilson up to #4 on our Big Board, while the Gators’ Trask is up to #5, just ahead of Lance.
Wilson doesn’t get much national exposure playing at BYU, which has been forced to cobble together a less-than stellar schedule, but he’s been having a Joe Burrow type campaign as he has lead the Cougars to an 8-0 record and an outside shot at a CFP spot. Wilson, an athletic 6-2, 210-pounder, has completed 75% of his pass attempts this fall, including 22 for scores versus just 2 picks. There are still some questions about Wilson’s pure arm strength and his ability to get the ball downfield, but he is an immaculate underneath passer with elite pocket instincts, a quick release, and incredibly accurate touch. For good measure, Wilson is also dangerous with the ball in his hands and can escape trouble in the pocket and make plays with his legs. Trask, on the other hand, is more of a prototype pocket passer. He’s a thick 6-4, 240-pounder with big-time arm strength. He’s also an accurate passer who has completed just under 70% of his passes so far this fall with 22 going for scores (in just 5 games) against only three interceptions. Trask isn’t as nifty on his feet as Wilson and doesn’t have the same quick release, but he sees the field well and will hang in the pocket to get the ball off.
