Random draft notes

April 14, 2021

Random draft notes … As of tomorrow, there will be just two weeks to go until the 2021 draft gets underway in Cleveland. And there’s two ways to think about that. On the one hand, one can say ‘wow!’ just 14 days to go. On the other, one can say ‘Jeez! we got two more weeks of this!!’ Cause there’s just not much going on as we seem to have hit that ‘too much analysis leads to paralysis’ stage of the draft process. And the fact is we are not likely to get much real draft news until the evening of the 29th … That said, there was kind of special deal in Columbus today where Ohio State QB Justin Fields went through a second pro day throwing session. Unfortunately, no media were allowed and any results/analysis has been slow to leak out other than the fact that Fields reportedly threw the ball ‘well!’ whatever that means. What we do know is that a half dozen teams had reps in Columbus today including San Francisco, Atlanta, Denver, Carolina, New England and the NY Jets. The 49ers, who have the 3rd pick overall and have to decide between QBs Mac Jones of Alabama and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance, along with Fields, were represented by G.M. John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan who were front and center during the workout … One other footnote from today’s pro day workout, CB Shaun Wade, who did not run at the Buckeyes’ first pro day because of a foot injury, ran the 40 in an impressive 4.43. Wade is considered to be a second round prospect … It was announced today that the rock band Kings of Leon will perform on the opening night of the draft, while Ann Wilson of Heart will sing the National Anthem. Other entertainers for the second and third days will be announced later … Not sure if it was by design, but the Kings of Leon consider themselves to be from Oklahoma and are reportedly big fans of Cleveland QB Baker Mayfield … Speaking of Cleveland, the Browns made some headlines today when they signed free agent DE Jadeveon Clowney to a 1Y, $10M contract. He’ll be paired at DE with Pro Bowler Myles Garrett giving the Browns what they hope will be one of the better 1-2 DE combinations in the league.
