QB Wentz out in DC … To absolutely no one’s surprise, Washington released QB Carson Wentz after just one less than stellar season in the nation’s capital. In releasing Wentz, whom they acquired from Indianapolis last spring for what amounted to a pair of 3rd round picks, Washington does save just over $26M in cap space. However, also leaves the Commanders with 2022 5th rounder Sam Howell, who has thrown 19 passes in his career to date, as the likely starter if the season were to open today. And with the 16th pick in this year’s opening round, Washington may be just outside the range where one of the top QB prospects in this year’s might come into range. Washington, though, is likely to sign a veteran QB to fill out their room and could also bring veteran Taylor Heinicke, who is currently a free agent, back for another year.
