As the QB turns: SF edition

March 10, 2017

As the QB turns: San Francisco edition … There is also plenty of QB intrigue in San Francisco this morning. The 49ers, who have the second pick overall in this year’s draft, signed 9 free agents since 4 PM yesterday including veteran journeyman QBs Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley, both of whom played with Chicago last year. The real intrigue, though, for the 49ers happened across the country when Kirk Cousins signed his franchise tender with Washington. Cousins is now eligible to be traded and that’s still a possibility. The more likely scenario, though, is that Cousins plays under the tag with Washington this year. However, because he was also tagged last year, Cousins can’t be franchised for a third year next year and the buzz around the league is that he intends to move to San Francisco as a free agent next year where he would be reunited with Kyle Shahanan. What all that means is that the 49ers aren’t likely to use the 2nd pick overall this year on a QB. Meanwhile, Chicago also isn’t likely to use the third pick on a QB after signing Mike Glennon away from Tampa Bay yesterday; that came after the Bears released Jay Cutler. Stay tuned.
