Cards reportedly happy with QB Murray off-season work effort … A bit of an interesting headline out of Arizona this past weekend where the Cardinals organization has reportedly at least been impressed with the work being put in by QB Kyler Murray. There has been speculation that if the Cardinals do end up with the #1 pick overall at the 2024 draft – and they actually may have two kicks at the can as they also have Houston’s top pick next April – that they would look to trade Murray and select USC’s Caleb Williams, the consensus top overall prospect for the upcoming draft. Murray has had his moments with the Cardinals, but there have been questions about his work ethic and maturity. There was, for example, a homework’ clause in the contract extension he signed last fall; plus, he was also very much former head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s guy who has been replaced by Jonathan Gannon. Murray is also coming off a torn ACL suffered late last season, but senior Cardinals’ officials have been pleased that he has stayed in the area to rehab the injury and reportedly has been working hard at it, although it is still somewhat problematic whether he’ll actually be available for the start of the upcoming season. There’s also the pesky question of just what kind of cap hit the Cardinals would be forced to take if they moved on from Murray next year. Murray signed a monster $231M extension that doesn’t even kick in until the start of next season prior to the start of the 2022 season and runs thru 2028. NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk, though, also had a report over the weekend that while the Cardinals would in fact take a huge hit if they moved on from Murray that given their current cap situation it would be ‘manageable’ for the Cardinals. Stay tuned!
