QB highs and lows from wild day in college football … It was kind of strange day yesterday in the world of college football with 4 top 20 teams going down to somewhat surprising losses. That included #10 Texas A&M going down to South Carolina, #11 Clemson getting whomped at home by Louisville, Iowa State, the other #11 lost a heartbreaker by one to Texas Tech; #17 Kansas State losing at Houston and #18 Pitt losing at SMU. Of course in the big game of the day #4 Ohio State held off #3 Penn State 20-13 as the Nittany Lions twice failed to score any points at all after getting a first and goal from inside the 5. That included a series with just over 5 minutes to play in the game. And as noted earlier it was a big test for PSU QB Drew Allar, who played okay completing 12 of 20 passes, but for less than 150 yards and with a pick as he just couldn’t get the ball down the field. It was also a strange kind of day for Georgia’s Carson Beck who rallied the Bulldogs to a 34-20 win over rival Florida in their annual game in Jacksonville as he threw of over 300 yards and a couple of scores, but had three interceptions for the 3rd time this season. We may be reading too much into it, but both Beck and Allar, who are both 3rd year players, look very much like prospects that really could use another year in college. On the other hand, Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart, one of the nation’s top 2-3 passers who still hasn’t quite caught the fancy of pro scouts, really did light it up yesterday as he completed 25 of 31 passes for over 500 yards and 6 scores in a wild 63-31 win at Arkansas. Dart, though, will get a chance to really state his case this coming week when the Rebels host Georgia. Miami’s Cam Ward also had a day as he rallied the unbeaten ‘Canes to a 53-31 win over an improved (6-3) Duke team as he completed 25 of 41 throws for 400 yards and 5 scores, although he did have a pick in there. Meanwhile Indiana’s Kurtis Rourke made a successful return to the lineup after sitting out last week with a thumb injury as he lead the unbeaten Hoosiers to an impressive road win at Michigan as he completed 19 of 29 passes for 263 yards and 4 TDs.
