Post-combine QB thoughts … We still have just over 50 days to go until the actual draft gets underway next month and there is still plenty of sorting out to be done, but a couple of trends at the QB position seem to be emerging. On the one hand, it is pretty clear that Cam Ward is now the consensus top QB in this year’s draft class. Nobody thinks he’s in the same class as former elite prospects like Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence or Caleb Williams, but there does seem to be a growing sense that Ward is at least worthy of being the #1 player selected on April 24th in Green Bay. And that’s not to say that Tennessee, which holds the top pick, will take Ward, its just hard to imagine that they won’t. Its just what NFL teams do: if they need a QB and have a shot at a good one, they take him and move on.
On the hand, the word on Shedeur Sanders seems to be all over the board. The issue with Sanders is that while he is a talented passer who sees the field really have, has a remarkably quick release, and is very accurate, he lacks the elite arm strength that is usually the preserve of top 10 picks. As such, it would appear that unlike Ward, Sanders is still far from a lock to be taken with the 2nd pick, either by Cleveland or someone that trades up. And that could bring a number of teams like the Giants, Raiders, and Jets into the equation. One also gets the sense that Jaxson Dart has clearly established himself as QB3, but at this time one also gets the sense that its more likely that he drops into the middle of the second day than sneaks into the latter part of the opening round.
