Poor turn out at EKU workout

March 4, 2016

Disappointing turnout for Spence pro day … All but four teams were represented at today’s pro day workout at Eastern Kentucky where DE Noah Spence was the main draw. However, according to a report on NFL.com, there were no head coaches or general managers in attendance. Washington did send director of college scouting Scott Campbell and the Jets sent director of college scouting Rex Hogan, while Tampa Bay defensive line coach Jay Hayes was the only position coach present. Typically, teams send at least one high-ranking member of the front office to check out a player they are interested in, especially where there are lingering questions. And there are certainly lingering questions about Spence, who many feel is still one of the top 2-3 pure pass rushers in the 2016 draft class. Spence has a well-documented history of drug use that got him kicked out of Ohio State and banned permanently from the Big Ten. All that was before the combine where Spence ran a disappointing 4.8 in the 40 and also reportedly did not impress in interviews. Of course, its also possible that any NFL teams still interested in Spence might say that they learned all they needed to know at the combine which ended less than a week ago. bottom line is that it is probably not a good sign for Spence who still could conceivably get a first round call, but almost certainly is no longer an emerging potential top ten candidate. For the record, Spence did not run particularly faster at today’s EKU workout were he reportedly ran in the 4.75-4.79 range.
