One more Tide WR in draft; onenot

January 6, 2020

One more Tide WR in draft; one not … While Alabama junior QB Tua Tagovailoa got most of the headlines when he announced earlier today, a couple of his former favorite targets also made their own news. On the one hand, junior WR Henry Ruggs, one of the fastest players in college football who figures to be a mid-first round prospect for the upcoming draft, confirmed that he will also be entering this year’s draft. On the other hand, fellow junior WR DeVonta Smith, arguably Bama’s most productive receiver this season, said he’d be staying in school for another year. Tagovailoa and Ruggs headline a group of 6 underclassmen who announced today that they would be entering this year’s draft including Wisconsin WR Quintez Cephus, Mississippi State OLB Willie Gay, Texas Tech DE Houston Miller and Virginia Tech RB Deshawn McClease, all of whom are considered to be later round or free agent type prospects. Cephus is arguably the most interesting prospect of these latter four. He’s got a lot of talent and was productive enough for the Badgers, leading the team in all major receiving categories this past season, but missed all of the 2018 season after being expelled from school following sexual assault charges, although he was ultimately acquitted and reinstated prior to the start of the 2019 season. Meanwhile, a couple of other potential top prospects announced today that they will be back at school in 2020 including Texas redshirt soph OT Sam Cosmi and Michigan junior WR Nico Collins.
