Lions sign Lions’ CFL DPOY … Detroit has signed B.C. Lions DE Mathieu Betts, the CFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2023, to a futures contract. Betts, who played collegiately for Canadian power Laval, had a breakout year last fall when he led the CFL with 18 sacks. He was originally signed as an undrafted rookie by Chicago in 2019, but was released at the end of training camp. Betts isn’t huge at 6-2, 250, but is very quick and is nothing if not relentless. Betts also reportedly worked out with Cleveland and Buffalo last month as part of the agreement between the CFL and NFL which allows NFL teams to sign Canadian league players in the off-season whether they are free agents or not. Meanwhile, Las Vegas signed Hamilton WR/KR Tyreik McAllister, a Charleston grad who spent some time on the Denver practice squad a couple of years ago, under the same arrangement last month.
