Jones starts

Jones starts, struggles in Bucks win … For those that missed the story, Cardale Jones did in fact make the start last night when Ohio State opened up defense of its 2014 national championship with a 42-24 win at Virginia Tech last night. Jones, though, didn’t throw the ball all that well as he completed just 9 of 18 passes for 186 yards and 2 TDs with a pick thrown in. Ironically, Jones who isn’t thought to be a great athlete was actually better running the ball as he ran for 99 yards and a score. Meanwhile, former OSU Braxton Miller made an impressive start as a slash all-purpose back as he had a couple of 50-plus yard TDs, one rushing and one receiving. While Ohio State did avenge its only loss last year, the game was closer than the final score indicated as Virginia Tech actually led at the half and the game didn’t really turn until Michael Brewer, the Hokies’ starting QB, was forced to leave the game with what was later diagnosed as a broken collarbone. Brewer, a late round or free agent prospect for the 2016 draft, is expected to miss 4-8 weeks. In fact, it was a good week all-around for top QB prospects. Penn State’s Christian Hackenberg, who many considered to be the best prospect at the position for the upcoming draft, for example, was downright awful in PSU’s humiliating 27-10 loss at Temple. Hackenberg completed just 11 of 25 passes for barely 100 yards, while he was sacked 10 times and had a pick. And Stanford’s Kevin Hogan, another top prospect for 2016, wasn’t much better as the heavily favored Cardinal lost the ‘Academic All-America’ bowl to Northwestern 16-6. Hogan did complete 20 of 35 pass attempts, but for only 155 yards and no scores, while he was picked off once.
