Giants at #1

Giants GM: Won’t force QB pick at #3 … NY Giants GM Joe Schoen had his turn at the microphone earlier this week at the NFL’s owners meeting in Florida and stated that with the signings of veteran QBs Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, the Giants wouldn’t be forcing a pick at QB with the 3rd pick overall at THIS month’s draft. In fact, its the kind of GM-speak that any genearl manager worth his salt would be making prior to the draft even if his team had every intention of forcing the pick. However, that didn’t stop more than reporter –here and here – from opining that ‘its look like the Giants won’t be taking a QB at #3 after all.’ Huh! That’s not what he said at all; and they get paid for that. It may mean that the Giants won’t force the pick by selecting a second-tier QB like Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart if neither of the top 2 QB prospects – Miami’s Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders – are available when the Giants get on the clock on the 24th; however, while we never like to say never, the Giants have been all over Sanders literally since the beginning of the 2024 season and will almost assuredly grab him if Cleveland should pass on him later this month. In fact, the Browns actually need a QB more than the Giants – Kenny Pickett IS cuuerntly their QB room -but there is a very stubborn rumor out there that, given their druthers, the Browns would prefer to trade for Atlanta veteran Kirk Cousins and instead use the 2nd pick this year to draft Penn State DE Abdul Carter to pair with recently resigned Myles Garrett to give the Browns a potentially very dynamic pass rush. Sounds like it would make some sense for the Browns and Giants to maybe flip the pick! Right on cue it is being reported (here by Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News via our good friend Eric Kennedy of Big Blue Interactive here) that Schoen was seen having a private chat with Browns GM Mike Borgonzi over coffee this week at the owners meeting.
