First Saturday on the college football schedule

September 3, 2016

College football season kicks-off … Its the first full Saturday of the college football season with a slew of reallygood games on the docket. Defending national champion Alabama, for example, kicks off its title defense playing Southern California in Arlington (8 PM ET; ABC), while 2nd ranked Clemson has a toughie at Auburn of the SEC West (9 PM ET; ESPN). In other key games today, LSU will play in Wisconsin against the Badgers at Lambeau Field(3:30 PM ET; ABC), while Pac-12 favorite UCLA play at Texas A&M (3:30 PM ET; CBS) in a game featuring two of the best young players in the country in UCLA sophomore QB Josh Rosen and A&M junior DE Myles Garrett, a potential top pick at this year’s draft. Arguably, ‘THE’ game of the week, though, is a red-versus-red match-up in Houston where the Cougars, the top-ranked non-power 5 conference team in the country entering the season, gets a huge BCS busting opportunity with Oklahoma in town. Kick-off for that one is at noon ET on ABC so don’t sleep on it.  Beat the Sooners and Houston would have a great case to make for inclusion in the BCS final four in January if they can run the rest of the table. Meanwhile, this is a also a huge game for Oklahoma as a loss to a non-power 5 program would put a real crimp in their national title aspirations even though it is still only the first week of the campaign. For good measure, the Cougars-Sooners dual also features two of the top Heisman candidates in the country in QBs Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma and Houston’s Greg Ward. Enjoy!!
