Final word on Baylor pro day

March 17, 2016

Final word on Baylor pro day … In the end, he probably still had hoped to run a tad faster, but star Baylor WR Corey Coleman was ultimately credited with an official, electronic 40-clocking of 4.37 seconds which is probably fast enough to keep in the conversation to be the first receiver off the board this coming April, especially given that until very recently he has been rehabbing from sports hernia surgery and still may not be 100%. Perhaps more importantly for Coleman’s final grade is the fact that he reportedly caught the ball well in positional drills, something he didn’t always do on the field for the Bears, and also looked comfortable enough running the full NFL route-tree, something he was not asked to do in the Bears’ spread offense. If nothing else, Coleman sent out a challenge to Ole Miss WR Laquan Treadwell, whose pro day comes up on March 28th; like Coleman, Treadwell did not run at the combine and hopes to show pro scouts that he has the speed to get deep on occasion. Meanwhile, NFL personnel people are scratching their heads over CB Xavien Howard who had a 40-clocking of close to 4.4 yesterday after he posting a disappointing time of 4.58 at the combine. For the record, DT Andrew Billings also ran significantly faster at the BU pro day (4.92) than at the combine (5.05). At the same time, word out of Baylor is that the team has not given up on trying to convince basketball star PF Rico Gathers to stay in school and play football next fall. Gathers, who did not participate in the BU pro day because he’ll be playing in a first-round NCAA tourney game later today, has said he intends to enter the 2016 NFL draft despite not having played football for years and probably would help himself by sticking with the Bears for a year.
