College playoff teams to be announced … The 4 teams to play in the next month’s college football playoffs will be announced on ESPN at Noon ET later this morning, but once again there are going to be a lot of unhappy people around the country. And with good reason. For those that don’t watch college football, Alabama and Clemson held serve and won their conference championships to finish the regular season unbeaten and will be seeded #s 1 and 2. Notre Dame, which completed an unbeaten season last weekend, will be the 3rd seed. So far, so good, but now it gets complicated. Oklahoma, which avenged its only loss of the year by beating Texas in the Big XII conference game 39-27, and Ohio State, which knocked off Northwestern 45-21 in the Big Ten final, both have perfectly legitimate claims to get the fourth and final spot in the playoff and one of them is going to get screwed! For that matter, both Georgia, which gave Alabama everything it could handle in the SEC championship before losing on a last-minute TD, also has a claim to be in the playoff, as does Central Florida, which hasn’t loss in over two years. The selection committee will make a nice speech about how they evaluated ‘the full body of work’ of each team, but the truth of the matter is they’ll just be flipping a coin! Its why the games should be played on the field. The problem is that the 4-team playoff just isn’t enough to accommodate all the teams that deserve a shot, especially when you have 5 so-called power conferences, but just 4 playoff spots. We can only hope!!
