Draft lite up north

Draft lite up north … The Canadian Football League holds its annual draft of Canadian born players this evening beginning at 8 PM ET. Coverage is available on TSN.Ottawa has the first pick in this year’s CFL draft, followed by Edmonton, Saskatchewan and Calgary. Here is the full selection order. Former Syracuse OT Matt Bergeron and the Brown twins – RB Chase and DB Sydney – from Illinois are the top-ranked prospects for tonight’s CFL lottery, but those three were all also selected in this past weekend’s NFL draft so may not be taken that early tonight as they will likely not be available to CFL teams anytime soon. Same for Eastern Michigan OG Sidey Sow and Mississippi DE Tavius Robinson who are 4th and 5th on the CFL board. In fact, even former Pitt WR Jared Wayne and Penn State DB Jon Sutherland, who are 6th and 8th respectively in the CFL rankings have signed as undrafted free agents with NFL teams. For the record, here are the rankings for Tuesday’s CFL draft. As noted, the CFL draft is only for Canadian players and currently most starters in the CFL are Americans who are generally signed as free agents, although every CFL team is allowed a 45-man protected list of players they have exclusive negotiating rights to.
