Dawgs, Cats have record draft

May 1, 2022

Dawgs, Cats have record drafts … Just in case anybody missed it, defending national champion Georgia led all colleges at the 2022 draft with 15 players selected. For the record, that’s the most by any school since the league went to a 7-round draft in 1994. The previous high was 14 set by Ohio State in 2004 and LSU in their championship season in 2020. In fact, it was actually LSU, and not Alabama, that the second largest contingent taken at this weekend’s draft as 10 Tigers were selected despite the fact that LSU is coming off a very disappointing 6-7 season. At the same time, Cincinnati was a surprising third with 9 total picks, while Penn State was next with 8. In the end, Alabama tied with Oklahoma for 5th with 7 players selected, while Ohio State, UCLA, Baylor and Mississippi had 6 each. The fact that Cincinnati had 9 picks is also quite remarkable. We haven’t been able to confirm it, but that has to be a record for non-Power 5 conference teams. Of course, the Bearcats will be off the Big XII at some point down the road, but still a great job by UC head coach Luke Fickell and his staff.

Meanwhile, today’s trivia question is what do ‘football powers’ Yale, Fordham, Samford, Villanova, Fayetteville State, NW Missouri State, and Southern Utah have in common. The answer: they all had a player selected at the 2022 draft which was one more than Texas which was shutout for the just the second time in history. Heck, even Big XII doormat Kansas, little Sam Houston State and even one of the academies (Air Force) had a player taken. Texas, though, wasn’t the only major program to be shutout at this year’s draft as Louisville, Syracuse, West Virginia, Arizona and Northwestern all also failed to have any players selected, while former draft juggernauts Miami and Florida State had just one each as did Auburn.
