CUSA Championship preview

November 30, 2021

WESTERN KENTUCKY (8-4) at TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO (11-1); 7 PM ET; CBSSN … Okay hands up – and no peeking – everyone – anyone – who knew for sure in which conference WKU and UTSA actually play. In fact, under normal circumstances we probably wouldn’t preview this game at all, but these are not normal times. And neither program is your typical CUSA team. UTSA, for example, went unbeaten, including a road win over Illinois early in the season, and was actually ranked until the very last week of the schedule when they lost their season finale at North Texas, while WKU won 7 straight to finish the year.

More to the point, Western Kentucky also has one of the most intriguing players in college football in QB Bailey Zappe (#4, 6-1, 220) who led the country in passing with almost 5,000 yards, 500 more than anyone else in FBS. Along the way, Zappe completed 70% of his passes including 52 for scores with 9 picks. For the record, we’ll see Zappe again as he’s been invited to the Senior Bowl. Zappe throws to a talented group of receivers led by junior WR Jerreth Sterns (#8, 5-9, 195), the second leading receiver in the country who had 127 receptions for over 1,500 yards and 12 scores. While they are in San Antonio scouts will also check out rangy LB DeAngelo Malone (#10, 6-4, 240) who leads the Hilltoppers defense. Meanwhile, UTSA also has a very productive QB in Frank Harris (#0, 6-0, 200), although he looks more like a CFL type player. Same for DE/OLB Clarence Hicks (6-2, 225) who led the team with 8 sacks.
