Conference championship previews: ACC

November 30, 2023

#4 FLORIDA STATE vs #14 LOUISVILLE (10-2); 8 PM ET; ABC … The ACC final is one of the last couple of games on the Saturday schedule, but in many ways it may have the biggest impact on the CFP Final 4. In reality, Michigan, Georgia and the winner of the Pac-12 championship game have all but locked up 3 of the 4 semi-final berths. And #4 Florida State can hold off Louisville it will be tough (though not impossible) for the committee to keep the the unbeaten Seminoles out of the playoffs. However, a loss by the ‘Noles and it will be let the debate begin asthere could be more than one team out there worthy of that final spot.

And it is not going to be easy for Florida State as they may have to face the Cardinals with their 3rd string QB, true freshman Brock Glenn (#11, 6-2, 215) as back-up Tate Rodemaker (#18, 6-2, 215) who is already trying to fill the big shoes of star starter Travis Jordan who is out for the year. Whoever does get the start for the Seminoles will at have a couple of terrific targets to work with in WRs Keon Coleman (#4, 6-4, 215), a big target who has emerged as the top-rated receiver in this year’s draft class after Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison, and Johnny Wilson (#14, 6-2, 240), another big target, has some second-day possibilities of his own. The Seminoles actually have a second top ten prospect in DE Jared Verse (#5, 6-4, 260), who has not had the kind of explosive season many expected after he posted 9 sacks last fall, but he’s still a very good all-around edge rushing candidate. Meanwhile, other ‘Noles to watch include CB Fentrell Cypress (#23, 6-0, 190), RB Trey Benson (#3, 6-0, 225), TE Jaheim Bell (#6, 6-3, 240), DTs Fabian Lovett (#0, 6-3, 320) and Braden Fiske (#55, 6-4, 300), OT Robert Scott (#52, 6-5, 315) and S Akeem Dent (#1, 6-0, 190), each of whom has at least some second-day potential.

For its part, Louisville also has an outstanding edge rush prospect in DE Ashton Gillette who was among the sack leaders across the country this fall with 11, although he still appears to be more of a second day candidate. Meanwhile, other Cardinals with mid or later round potential include CB Storm Duck (#29, 6-1, 200) and C Bryan Hudson (#61, 6-3, 305) who was just named the ACC’s best blocker.
