Comments on prime time combine … We probably won’t know for a day or so whether the combine’s revamped schedule to accommodate prime time TV generated higher ratings. It probably did, but probably only goes to show that there are just far too many people with too much time on their hands. Its boring as hell! Its supposed to be as boring as hell! Its not entertainment, its scouting football players. We do give the combine folks credit for grouping the players by specific positional groups. In the past, they tended to bunch DTs and DEs together, for example, or CBs and safeties whereas this year they had DEs running against DEs and DTs with DTs which made for much better positional comparisons. However, they couldn’t leave well enough alone when it came to the 40s, the one truly watchable event on the schedule. They’d show 7-8 guys do their runs, then cut to 3-4 minutes of commercials, then race through the guys they missed. With so much down time over the 7 plus hours of coverage each day, was it too much asking them to stick with the relatively few minutes each position spent doing their 40s and run the commercials during what seemed like hours of down time. Just asking! We’d also like them to rethink some of their announcers. Don’t really want to name names, but I found myself muting the volume far too often to drown annoying chatter. Again, do they want to stick with serious football (yeeaa!!) or go even more schmatzy (boo!!).
