Come bet with me … or NOT!! … I don’t know if anyone else has noticed, but of late there have been a lot stories referencing the odds of this or that player being selected here or there. Just day, for example, we have here and here and here and here. In fact, I don’t really recall ever seeing much along those lines prior to the year and I am tempted to say I don’t know the reason. But who is kidding who! Like other professional sports leagues around the world, the NFL has jumped into bed with both feet with the major sports books after treating them like pariahs for literally decades. So a few words of advice: DON”T BET ON THE DRAFT! Heck, don’t even read about betting odds for the draft. If how the major books set their point spreads is any indication, they aren’t telling you who they think will be selected at a certain point, but which odds will get them the most action! To wit, they are virtually meaningless. And maybe I am a little too old school here, but I believe the draft is about selecting players to play in the NFL. Period. And my fear is that turning it into a spectacle either so somebody can make money off of it or others with too much time and/or money on their hands can be ‘entertained’ threatens to ruin the concept.
