Collge football notebook

College football notebook … For those who missed it last evening, Houston overcame a sluggish start and three turnovers to defeat Cincinnati 40-16 to open their American Athletic Conference schedule. At 3-0, Houston also remains very much in the hunt for a berth in the post-season BCS playoff structure. Cougars’ QB Greg Ward, playing despite a banged up shoulder injured in the team’s big opening week win over Oklahoma, had 400 yards of total offense as he completed 24 of 36 passes for 326 yards and a score, while running for another 73 yards and two scores, although he also threw a couple of picks in a somewhat up-and-down performance which actually probably didn’t add much to his Heisman resume … Its been another frustrating season for Wisconsin RB Corey Clement. Clement had been projected as a possible late first round candidate for the 2016 draft, but ended up missing missed eight games last season because of a sports hernia. Now Clement will likely will miss the Badgers’ game with Georgia State on Saturday after injuring his ankle in last week’s win over Akron. When healthy, Clement has been solid enough rushing for 197 yards and three touchdowns in the game and a half he has played, but needless to say NFL scouts are going to be wary of the durability issue … Pitt WR Dontez Ford could miss much of the rest of the regular season after undergoing surgery to repair a broken collarbone. The 6-2, 215-pound Ford is a big-play threat who could get some late-round interest this year after averaging over 19 yards per catch in 2015, although he had only two receptions in the Panthers’ two wins to date this fall.
