College football notes: Indiana junior WR Simmie Cobbs, a potential early 2017 draft entrant, apparently won’t play at all this year after undergoing surgery on an ankle. Cobbs, who had over 1,000 receiving yards in 2015, was injured on the first and only play he participated in this year when his ankle got rolled in the Hoosiers’ win over Ball State on Saturday. Cobbs had been suspended for IU’s season opening win over Florida International. Meanwhile, Indiana coaches are anxiously awaiting word on star OG Dan Freeney, a late first-day pick this year. Feeney suffered against a concussion against Ball State and did not return to the game. Freeney will get a little extra time to recuperate as Indiana has an early bye this week … Wyoming OLB D.J. May, a somewhat intriguing second-tier prospect for 2017 at the position, has been suspended for Saturday’s home game against California-Davis for a violation of team rules. Normally, that wouldn’t be all that significant, but this is the third time in the last three years that May has been suspended for a game for a violation of team rules. May is currently second on the team with 17 tackles through two games after posting 70 last fall. What makes him an interesting candidate, though, is that he is a very good athlete; in fact, he’s a converted RB who also currently leads the Cowboys in KO returns.
