CFL start pushed back to August but still a go

CFL start pushed back to August but still a go for now … The Canadian Football League announced earlier today that the league will in fact try and return to play this fall after not playing at all in 2020. However, the start of the regular season, which usually gets underway in June, has been pushed back to August 5th with each team scheduled to play 14 games rather than the usual 18. The Grey Cup has been rescheduled to December 12th in Hamilton. The announcement includes the proviso that the current plan is subject to the state of COVID-19 across the country and that in order to start the season the league must get the approval of public health officials across the country as well as permission from governments to have a significant number of fans in the stands as the CFL, unlike most other professional sports’ leagues in North America which receive as a major share of revenue from media coverage, depends heavily on ticket sales. For the record, the CFL draft of Canadian players is scheduled for May 4th at 7 PM ET.
