Browns win; Browns win

December 24, 2016

Browns win; still #1 … Cleveland avoided the ignominy of an 0-16 season by defeating San Diego 20-17 earlier this afternoon for their first victory of the season. And the Browns couldn’t lose for winning as they will hang onto the #1 pick in the 2017 draft selection order heading into the final week of the schedule as San Francisco, which had the second pick heading into the week, ended a 13-game losing streak with a TD and two-point conversion with just 31 seconds to play to edge the L.A. Rams 22-21. In fact, the Christmas eve schedule had something of an appropriate ‘the meek shall inherit the earth quality’ as the three teams with the worst records in the league. Jacksonville made it three-for-three with an upset of Tennessee. As a result of the these results if the draft were held this week, Cleveland would still have the first pick overall, followed by San Francisco at #2, Chicago at #3, Jacksonville at #4, Tennessee (with the Rams pick) at #5, and the N.Y. Jets at #6. For the record, Cleveland, which can pick no worse the second this coming April, closes the season out with a road game at Pittsburgh, while San Francisco will be home to Seattle, Chicago will be at Minnesota, Jacksonville will be at Indianapolis, the Rams host Arizona and the Jets host Buffalo. The full selection order for the first round of the 2017 draft will be after the Monday night game.
