“To QB or not to QB” central issue for Browns with #2 pick … A report earlier today by Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer added a little more fuel to speculation that the Browns will be taking a QB with the #2 pick in this year’s draft, at least if there is one worth such an early pick. According to the report, new Browns’ head coach Hue Jackson continues to indicate that the team will move on from enigmatic Johnny Manziel and that the team needs to find their QB of the future. And Jackson pulled no punches when he added that “If there is a QB at #2 that is a best fit for our team, we need to get him.” asnd then for emphasis: “It’s my opinion we need a quarterback.” The issue then for the Browns will be whether there actually is a QB worth #2 pick this year. Cal junior Jared Goff is currently the top-rated guy at the position, but isn’t necessarily considered to be a top 5 prospect by most analysts, although he’s also not that far off. Meanwhile, Memphis junior Paxton Lynch and/or Michigan State veteran Connor Cook could also work their way into the mix, although neither appears to be a top 10 guy at this point. What could complicate the process for the Browns is that if as expected Tennessee takes Ole Miss OT Laremy Tunsil over Ohio State DE Joey Bosa with the top pick, Cleveland would have to pass on a local hero to get their QB at #2. Not sure whether it will get much traction, but one wonders if at some point there might be some popular push in the local media to consider taking Bosa with second pick and then taking Ohio State QB Cardale Jones with the first pick in the second round. Fortunately, the Browns still have just over 100 days – 102 to be exact – to make their decision. Stay tuned!
