Bonus coverage: college football on Sunday

Bonus coverage: college football on Sunday … Anyone thinking that was it for the week in college football after Saturday’s terrific slate of games, including a couple between top 10 teams, needs to take a couple of breaths and recharge as there is more to come Sunday with #6 Notre Dame going south to face #10 Miami (7:30 PM ET; ABC). Miami, of course, is coming off something of a draft high after QB Cam Ward was the first player selected overall this past April. Miami will be replacing Ward with former Georgia QB Carson Beck (#11, 6-3, 225) who, somewhat ironically, was actually the guy being considered as the likely #1 pick in 2025 at this time last year. But the angular Beck struggled thru an inconsistent season last fall with UGA that included too many turnovers and prompted a return to school and transfer. However, even if Beck can’t resurrect his draft prospects, there is a better than even chance that the Canes will have a major impact on the upcoming draft as they have a couple of elite prospects in DE Rueben Bain (#4, 6-3, 270) and RT Francis Mauigoa (#61, 6-5, 315), both of whom have top 5-10 potential. The Canes should also feature a number of decent mid-to-late round candidates including DE Akeem Mesidor (#3, 6-3, 265) and LB Mo Toure (#1, 6-2, 235), a Rutgers transfer who has been an outstanding player, but has had his career path interrupted by a couple of torn ACLs included one that kept him off the field the entire 2024 campaign.

Meanwhile, the Irish are in something of a rebuilding mode after making it all the way to last year’s CFP championship game. The one room they won’t have to worry about are the RBs. Indeed, Jeremiyah Love (#4, 5-11, 215) is one of THE top prospects at the position in all college football with legit first-round potential. Love combines with fellow junior Jadarian Price (#24, 5-10, 210) to give the Irish the best 1-2 RB combo in the country outside Penn State. The Irish laso have a pretty good RT with at least some first-round possibilities of their own in junior Aamil Wagner (#59, 6-5, 300), along with a couple of big, physical second-day type receivers in Jaden Greathouse (#1, 6-0, 215) and Malachi Fields (#0, 6-3, 220).

The Notre Dame-Miami game is actually the back-end of a pretty good double header which kicks off with Virginia Tech playing at #13 South Carolina. That will give folks a chance to check out Gamecocks’ QB LaNorris Sellars, a dynamic dual-threat type who has gotten his share of props to be the first QB off the board at the upcoming draft, although as just a 3rd year player is no lock to turn pro this winter.
