Big uglies wrap combine workouts

Big uglies wrap combine workouts … The on-field workouts aspect of the scouting combine wrap up later today with the offensive linemen doing their physical testing and positional drills. Remember that this afternoon’s session starts at 1 PM ET on the NFL Network. Certainly, there was plenty to chew on at yesterday’s workout for the QBs, WRs and RBs highlighted by that record breaking 4.21 40 clocking by Texas WR Xavier Worthy. Whether that’s enough to push Worthy back up into the first round remains to be seen; what’s still true is that he is also still a very spindly 165-pounds which remains a red flag for him. Indeed, a pretty good case can be made that his Texas teammate Adonai Mitchell actually may have done himself even more running a 4.34 at 205 pounds. And just maybe THE big winner on the day was Georgia’s Ladd McConkey who came into the day rated as an elite route runner with average speed but is sure to change some minds with a sub-4.4 clocking. In fact, it was pretty much an all-around solid day for the receivers, almost all of whom ran at least under 4.5 seconds and we’ll leave it those with higher pay grades to decide whether anyone’s actual grade go up or down and by how much. Same for the QBs who threw in Indianapolis yesterday. We actually thought that of those that did throw, South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler looked the best; he was throwing tight spirals, on time and on the numbers all afternoon. Meanwhile, the other top tier QBs – Michigan’s JJ McCarthy, Michael Penix of Washington and Oregon’s Bo Nix – also were solid, although somewhat inconsistent at times and while we came away impressed we weren’t convinced we were watching top ten type performances, especially after re-watching CJ Stroud’s outing last year. In particular, Nix’ lack of prototype arm strength may have been exposed, while Penix has a somewhay slow, elongated release and McCarthy has some sloppy technique with his footwork in the pocket. Time will tell. For now here are the reviews of yesterday’s workout here and here and here.
