Big uglies, backs set to run … The offensive linemen are warming up for their on-field testing and positional drills as we speak at the scouting combine in Indianapolis with the RB slated to go a little later today. A couple of points to note. There are usually two times reported; the first is a hand-time with the official times reported when all run are completed. In the past, the official times were often up to a tenth slower so people shouldn’t get too excited by a fast initial time. NFL people are also quick to note that the 40 times aren’t all that relevant for the offensive line as they are almost never asked to run much more than 10 yards. So the 10-yard splits are important for this group. However, the 40-time is an indicator of overall athleticism so NFL teams would like to see a LT prospect, for example, run under 5.15. Over the day we’ll be reporting the noteworthy developments in the combine blog; we’ll also be posting and analyzing the final official numbers for every position.
