Big turnout for QB Pickett’s Pitt pro day … The 2022 QB draft class has never gotten much respect from either the NFL personnel community or the media. However, that does not appear to be stopping teams with big needs at the position and early picks in next month’s draft from doing their due diligence on this year’s top passers. There was a big crowd out today for example, at the Pittsburgh pro day where QB Kenny Pickett was the headliner. Pickett went thru a scripted passing regimen and by all accounts looked very good, although as with all these workouts, he was throwing against air. His infamous hand also measured in today at 8 5/8 inches, up an eighth from the combine, although that’s still a small hand, at least by NFL QB standards. At the same time, though, what may have been most important about today’s Pitt workout was who actually attended. Bothy Carolina and Atlanta, for example, had full contingents in Pittsburgh with the Panthers represented by G.M. Scott Fitterer, head coach Matt Rhule, as well as their offensive co-ordinator and QB coach, while the Falcons had G.M. Terry Fontenot, along with their OC and QB coach there for a close and personal look at Pickett. Bottom line is that teams just don’t send their senior people to see prospects in person unless they already some interest.
Meanwhile, not sure yet who Houston, which has both the third and 13th picks this year, had at the Pitt pro day, but G.M. Nick Caserio suggested over the weekend that while the Texans have liked what they saw in Davis Mills, their third-round pick last year who had a solid enough rookie campaign, that ‘they are just starting to scratch the surface on the position’ and that all options are on the table including taking a QB with one of their two opening round picks. For the record, Liberty’s Malik Willis will workout tomorrow at his pro day, while Ole Miss’ Matt Corral and Desmond Ridder of Cincinnati will throw on Thursday, with the NFL Network covering the Liberty pro day tomorrow at 1 PM ET and the Ole Miss event at 4 PM ET on Thursday.
