Baker gets call to start for Panthers … Carolina ended any further drama as to who will start the season at QB as the Panthers have announced that Baker Mayfield will get the job ahead of Sam Darnold when they open the season against – ironically – Cleveland on September 11th. Ironically, of course, as the Panthers acquired Mayfield from the Browns early this year after Cleveland acquired Deshaun Watson from Houston. And the move has some implications for the 2023 draft. With Darnold at QB there is a pretty good chance that the Panthers would have been in the hunt for a very early draft pick next spring; however, while he certainly had his ups-and-downs in Cleveland, Mayfield clearly makes Carolina more competitive.
