Browns ‘regrets’ after Sanders, Hunter Showcase … Cleveland GM Andrew Berry, who led a full contingent of Browns’ front office personnel at yesterday’s pro day ‘showcase’ at Colorado featuring QB Shedeur Sanders and WR Travis Hunter, said he had one huge regret after the event in that he couldn’t take both players with the 2nd pick at this month’s draft, now less than 20 days away. Of course, Berry was just joking as both guys are likely to be selected with the first 3-4 picks on the 24th. However, unlike Tennessee, which is still saying formally that ‘all options are on the table’ even though it appears that the Titans are already about 99% committed to taking Miami QB Cam Ward with the first pick overall. one gets the feeling that the Browns are still somewhat conflicted about what they are going to do at #2. In a chat with local reporters at last week’s owners meetings Berry said, for example, that he does “believe in using the shot clock and using the time that’s available to you. I think by that time we’ll have a pretty good sense in terms of how we view the individuals as both players and people. I wouldn’t maybe undersell the amount of time that we start thinking through draft strategy because you can walk a number of different paths with that pick, whether you pick a quarterback, a non quarterback, trade up, trade down, looking at all those different scenarios and then seeing how the draft could possibly sequence from there and then ultimately how good you feel about those outcomes both in the short term and how it sets the franchise up in the longer term.” Again that can all be just the usual smoke and bluster one hears pretty much as a matter of course at this time of year, but it also seems that the Browns are at least less committed on the QB than say the Titans or even the Giants who we suspect would be very happy to take Sanders if the Browns should pass. Lets also not forget that the Browns have also done a ton of due diligence on Penn State DE Abdul Carter who is yet another option for them at the #2 spot.
