CBs Porter, Gonzalez check some early boxes

CBs Porter, Gonzalez check some early boxes … With the first group of defensive backs heading to the field for their physical testing and positional drills, a couple of notes on the CB weigh-in. On the one hand, both Joey Porter of Penn State and Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez certainly passed the eyeball test. Porter measured in at 6-2.5 and 193 pounds with really long arms for a CB at 34-inches. Gonzalez isn’t quite as long at 6-1.5, 197 with 32-inch arms (which is good enough) but he ripped off an explosive 41.5-inch vertical. The other corner who really aced the weigh-in was Kansas State’s Julius Brents who measured in at 6-2, 198 with 34-inch arms; and for good measure he also rocked a 41.5-inch vertical. At the same time, Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon didn’t wow anyone at the weigh-in as he came in at -11.5, 181 with 31-inch. And as noted earlier Weatherspoon won’t be able to show his strength – his speed and athleticism – as he will be sidelined by a hamstring this afternoon. Cam Smith of South Carolina also came in with 31.5-inch arms. Meanwhile, several other prominent corner prospects have some ground to make up at the work out. Mississippi State’s Emaunel Forbes, for example, only weighed in at a slender 166 pounds, while Iowa’s Riley Moss (30″), Utah’s Clark Phillips (30″), and Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson (29″) each has very short arms.
